e-Invoicing Under GST (2026): Who Needs It, Limits & How It Works

A simple 2026 explainer on e-invoicing under GST — the turnover limit, who must generate an IRN, how e-invoicing works step by step, and how it differs from a normal GST invoice.

"e-Invoicing" causes a lot of confusion — many think it means emailing a PDF. It doesn't. Under GST, e-invoicing is a specific process of reporting B2B invoices to a government portal to get them authenticated. Here's what it is and whether it applies to you.

What is e-invoicing under GST?

e-Invoicing means generating your B2B invoice in your own system, then reporting it to the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), which validates it and returns a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a signed QR code. Your invoice isn't legally complete for e-invoicing-covered businesses until it carries that IRN and QR code.

Who needs to do e-invoicing?

Applicability is based on aggregate annual turnover. The threshold has been lowered in stages over the years, so more small businesses are now covered. As a rule of thumb, if your turnover has crossed the current notified limit in any financial year since 2017-18, e-invoicing likely applies to your B2B supplies. Because the limit changes, always confirm the current threshold on the GST portal or with your CA.

What's excluded

  • B2C invoices (though a dynamic QR code may apply separately for large businesses)
  • Certain sectors like SEZ units, insurers, banks/NBFCs, transporters and cinema operators

How e-invoicing works, step by step

  • Create the invoice in your billing software in the standard schema.
  • The details are sent to the IRP.
  • The IRP validates them and returns the IRN + a signed QR code.
  • You issue the invoice to your buyer with the IRN and QR printed on it.
  • The data auto-flows to your GSTR-1 and the e-way bill system.

e-Invoice vs a normal GST invoice

The GST invoice format and fields are largely the same — e-invoicing just adds the IRP reporting step and the IRN/QR code. If e-invoicing doesn't yet apply to you, a standard compliant tax invoice is perfectly valid.

Does Envoiz generate IRNs? Envoiz creates fully compliant GST invoices, quotations and GST reports. Direct IRN generation via the IRP requires a GSP integration — if that's important to you, let us know and we'll prioritise it. In the meantime you can raise invoices in Envoiz and report them through your e-invoicing provider.
